The dummy guide....

Post by RAF_Dumoulin »

Hello,

We need ABSOLUTELY to publish a dummy guide.....
I'm SICK to see all those news ppl's caming at SimhQ and Frugals ...asking how use EAW and receiving from well intentionned ppl's many answers completely differents... driving them in any directions and as result ..... they go out by exhaustion Image
We need a DUMMY GUIDE.......
Not a moder guide.....not a encyclopedia..... Image
Noobs no need to know what is a 3DZ ...a hexedit!!! or a FLT file.
Noobs need to know what make with his EAW CD in hand ..facing his PC.
Noobs want to play EAW.....
So the DUMMY GUIDE will show him ...in a few lines and very brief explaination how he will proceed for PLAY EAW.... :)
When a noob will be able to play EAW ...if he is interested...he will ask more questions or will discover by himself others things or will askhow mod...etc....
Any have suggestions....
Will be good few post here a DUMMY GUIDE....and so we will be able to review and eventually correct and gather the infos...and publish a BASIC DUMMY GUIDE..... :)
Actually we have many potential players but we lost them... Image

BTW ... read my signature as a thing to medit...... Image

Hello Dumo,

Agree in principle - but I thought we had a number of dummy guides?

The wicki, at Sandbaggers etc?

We do certainly need something that adressed in clear terms the most basic issues - using XP, glitches with video cards, how to install modded campaigns etc. We have had a clutch of new players recently on the boards, and I would guess these are representative of a larger number of new players who have not posted.

So what are the points we need to list for newbies?

Hello,

Noobs want to play EAW.....

This tell all......
No need to explain what is a campaign....
Campaigns are already in the EAW CD !!!! (Careers)
What the noobs need.. ??
Well...
When he put his CD in the drive and have a message of Windows as "not able to run...etc.." he need a answer!
He see "7217" .... he need a answer !
He see "corrupted maps or briefings" .... he need a answer!
This the common questions of the noobs.... the real noobs !
the hardest noobs ..who also don't know their OS.
So...it's must not be a encyclopedia...but few lines understandable by any fool noobs..who are just able to calligraph their name!!! Image
The less technical possible ... the best it will be.
The Wicki - Sandbagger...etc ...are too much complicated for the noobs...
Already they are not able to navigate in a website..ROFL...how they will gather the infos they need...!!!

Personnaly..I think...Huntress...will be very qualified for made this DUMMY GUIDE ..if we gather between us..what is really essential to be know by a noob for PLAY EAW !!

Agree those are priority issues - newbs just want to play.

Can we get Huntress to write a short paragraph for each problem and run it past everyone and then put it up as a "sticky" at SimHQ?

Hello Moggy,

I'm ready to be in touch and be the speaker of us about the DUMMY GUIDE" with Huntress.
But before go further... it will be good to see here posted the advices of ppl's like Sydbod -Mr Jelly and Knegel or others of the group ..who have words to tell about this DUMMY GUIDE.
We will surely find a agreement of what and in wich order it's to put in the DUMMY GUIDE.
When all gathered and agreed ...it will be time to contact Huntress about..and she will be able to make a nice song with all those infos.
What do you think.. ? and more..what think the others .. ?

I've sent out an email to all members of the Code Group asking them to have a look at this thread and comment.

Hi All,

I have had many discussions about this very topic with various people.

Most of us keep talking about all the different ways to do things and how flexible EAW is in its many ways of installation. This is not good for new people.

We require a DICTATOR to say how things will be done.........(this will be hard).

For the noobs, there is only one form of installation.

1)Preferred hardware.....preferred drivers.......problem hardware...problem drivers.

IF AND ONLY IF SUITABLE HARDWARE THEN THE FOLLOWING

2) EAW FULL install from a CD.
3) 1.26e patch (it will find the install directory if EAW was installed from the CD and therefore the registry info is there)
4)Configure EAW (ini and settings), GlideWrapper (settings)
5)OAW to have its default install preconfigured for a setup as in 2&3. OAW install procedure.

NOW AT THIS POINT WE CAN ADD OTHER INFO, LIKE 7217 WORKAROUND, GARBLED COCKPIT, GARBLED BRIEFING SCREEN.....ETC.

This to be made as a sticky at the top of the forums.

We should try to avoid any information that is not directly related to a STANDARD install, that way we will not confuse new players that do require a standard install.

The others that have strange problems can ask as they now do, with a post.

Anyway thats my 2.52c worth. (I hope I calculated the exchange rate conversion correctly)

Regards sydbod :)

Hello,

Interesting.... Image
The delimitaton of the hardwares and softwares accepted by EAW at first rank is a must of course.
Next please Image

I think Sydbod has it wrapped up pretty well - though I wonder if the OAW install shouldn't wait until the 7217 and garbled briefing screens are dealt with? It seems to me that these are basic needs to run the game properly, whereas OAW is a program to manage files once EAW is running. Get it running smoothly, THEN install OAWUnified to give them stuff to play with.

Hello,

A other nice idea.... :)
I would just remind at our honourables members of the coders group one thing....
All their job will be a non-sens ...if this is no players (new players!!) for use the fruits of their hard work....
So...a DUMMY GUIDE ... will maybe help to retain and give interest at the noobs about EAW......
Too much seem's for me ...give up...as they find the game EAW difficult to setup. (it's not so difficult...but we must cope with headwood noobs.. :) )

Hi all,
I think that Gus and others are correct, in that if we can't hold onto new players then EAW will die quicker than needs be.

The starting Gate pages at Tally-Ho were compiled by me based on information gathered from the EAW community.

Gus and his site has a wealth of information.

Individual forum members also have their own way to fix certain problems.

Other forums have a sticky type thread giving basic information on how to install and run sims. Admittedly, the problems we have in EAW are more, due to it's age and the many mods created over the years.

I think a central co-ordinator is needed (maybe Kay) to put together the basic information needed to get a new install of EAW up and running. Followed maybe by how to add the different mods as seperate EAW installs.

The final product can be released either as a sticky on the forum, by a User Guide for download or as updates to the Starting Gate.

As long as we get the necessary information 'out there' - that's the killer.

Yes sure...IMHO it will be good to stick to Huntress for be the coordinator and the author of this DUMMY GUIDE.
She is really a professional helper...and she is able to explain and made understand anything to the most headwood illiterate PC stuborn noobs.Image
So..for me she is in pole position for this task.Image

Don't care of newbies.... we continue to make our hard work...and don't taking care of the newbies... as we will play the game forever..with 10 or 15 players... ROFL.
That's the feeling I have...when I see the number of the coders group members who care to reply to this post... :) :)
