Which war was this?

Post by Moggy »

Anyone recognise this air war?

The war is often cited as the last occasion on which piston engined fighters fought each other - both sides deploying former World War II American types. P-51 Mustangs, F4U Corsairs, T-28 Trojans and even Douglas DC-3s converted into bombers saw action

I ran into these details this afternoon when the "Soccer War" came up as a topic as conversation in the office in the context of England v Argentina in the world Cup final (there's optimism)

But think of that - Mustangs and Corsairs dogfighting as late as 1969!

Did someone say there were some pictures?

Shreckie - searching for these - there were at least two different RAF armoured car companies involved.

One was actually based at Habbaniyah, the other was actually based in Palestine and made the crossing of the Syrian desert with KingCol being attacked by the Luftwaffe 110s.

Soon as I can get anything definite I'll send it over
