EAW and Windows XP Screen Quality
I'm wondering if there is a coorelation between color quality settings and some CTD's in EAW. Do you use 16 or 32 bit quality? And, how many if any use compatibility mode and 256 colors. Or, does it make no difference at all.
If all else fails, punt. Or, RUN AWAY!!!
This is my setting - use a 1650 x 1050 flat screen
My eaw.ini/jaw.ino is set to 1650 x 1050, and if I take a screenie of an 8 bit selection or briefing screen the picture is "normal".
However, all my inflight screenies look like this:
Consequently I have to cut and paste from these screenies to post in a forum. The lnflight map is also distorted:

Hi Iron Mike,
I assume you are talking with regard to WinXP.
With this operating system, the instant WinXP sees the file name "EAW.EXE", it triggers its own compatibility layer code and switches the system into 8 bit 256 color mode as well as some other changes.
Any changes that you make will probably be overwritten with the compatibility changes that the operating system is preprogrammed for.
The only time your chosen changes will be used, is if the file name is not already configured within the WinXP compatibility data base. But trust me it is.

It looks like I'm the only one so far to use ATI. What I don't understand is why sometimes I can fly all night without a problem and others I'll get a CTD with the XP has a problem and must close message after a few minutes.
I didn't install EAW, I copied it from a 1.26e install on my WIn98 box.

Xp and 98...
Could there be a compatibility problem between 98 and Xtra Problems?Especially in relation to drivers?.I did the copy paste thing with 1.26e but both with XP.Could be worse could be using Vista.

You may have a stability problem with your machine.
I don't appear to have problems when I run with ATI video on some of my machines.
Nads runs ATI.
Knegel runs ATI.

I'd love to figure out what that may be. I've run quite a few other programs old and new w/o problems. Like Grand Prix Legends, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Silent Hunter III, Brothers in Arms. Only Grand Prix IV and EAW seem to make me crazy.
Then are there any diags to recomend to test the stability of my rig?

The main one is memory stability.
Usually the best test in a memory diagnostic that comes with virtually any Linux distribution, but you can download a version and load it up (self booting) and run it over night to see if any problems.

The other most common problem would be if you are running an ATI video card with AGP video slot.
IF you are, then go into your BIOS and set the AGP down to 4X instead of 8X.
See what happens.
