Screens

Post by rotton50 »

Moggy,

The good news is that many of the hangar screens are already available. I'll do a search and start work on the one's that are missing.

I can tell you that the only very late war model included in the list is the Ki-102. It started production in October, 1944 and a few saw action at Okinawa.

That's good :D

Okay, I'll consider what else we can put in place of the Ki 102 for these 1944 battles.

Many thanks!

Having had a further look at that original CAW japanese aircraft list, looks like we can remove the Army aircraft Ki-43 Oscar,, Ki-61 Tony, Ki-45 Nick, and J2M3 Jack since the only Army aircraft in theatre were in the Phillipine Command of the 4th Air Army which was equipped with the Ki-84 Frank.

So that Japanese list is going to look more like this:

Flyables:

109e - B6N2 Jill
109g - Ki84 Frank
109k - N1K2 George
110c - D4Y2 Judy
110g - E13A Jake
190a - A6M5 Zero
190d - D3A2 Val
262a - B5N2 Kate

Non-flyables

m410 - J1N1 Irving
j88a - C6N Myrt
j88c - P1Y1 Frances
ju87 - Ki56 Thalia transport ???? (Hudson makes a good proxy)
h111 - G4M2 Betty

Plane list

Post by rotton50 »

Just bouncing ideas here:

Do you want a flyable OKHA involved? If so, move the Val to the JU87 slot and put the OKHA in the 262 slot.

I think there's some transparency problems with a prop plane in the jet slot anyway.

I suppose the question is - when did the Okha come into use?

Moggy, the OKHA was deployed in March of 1945.

Here's a list of screens I've found so far on by various authors:

Helldiver
Avenger
Dauntless
Corsair
P47C
P38H

Jill
George
Judy
Irving
Frances
Val
Zero
Kate

Still looking for:
Frank
Judy
Jake
Myrt
F6F
Ventura
B25

A couple of things:

I don't have anything listed for the Tempest slot and the 190D slot.
How about a Seafire in the Tempest slot?

There's 2 Avengers listed, one in the P51D slot and one in the Spit 9 slot.

Do you plan to have flyable B17's and Pb4Y's?

I also found an entire Japanese set of screens on the Aces Rising website.

As we're dealing 1944 in this part of the addon, looks like no Okha sadly.

Excellent collection of hangars - how well will they fit the carrier theme - well at least for the carrier based planes?

Tempest is vacant at the moment. Would love to have the Seafire in, but there's no where it gets used in this theatre in 1944. Possible another US aircraft used by the Navy, Marines or Air Force? We did have the Kingfisher in the early stages, but we don't have a convincing model. Flyright suggested adapting the Helldiver with the paste on floats used on some of the Japanese single engine floatplane models. I had a go but the RS problems were complicated :)

The Val goes in the 190d slot.

The two Avengers are the carrier based USN version and land based US Marine version. The Marines flew from the Marianas (Guam & Saipan) once these were occupied by US forces in June 1944

No B17s - did'nt get used in this theatre. We did originally plan for the B29 which was based in the Marianas after the islands were taken from the Japanese in 1944, but the theatre as finally formed didn't include any B29 targets.

Instead I've put in two Liberators, the navy PB4Y version, and the 13th Air Force version. These are in non-flyable slots since although we have plenty of targets attacked by both in theatre (so they can be escorted and intercepted) we don't actually have their home bases which were in the Marshall Islands (navy) or New Guinea (air force) so we couldn't have any ground starts.

Thinking about that ju87 slot, I wonder if one of the big Japanese sea planes might be a better choice. H6K Mavis (we do have a model) or H8K Emily (for which the available Sunderland model is a dead ringer)

Screens

Well it helps that you don't need hangar screens for the non-flyables.

I found some more hangar screens.

F6F ( 2 land based )
B24
Ki84 (George)
A B5N2 Kate that looks like a Myrt if you squint. :-)

That leaves the B25, Ventura, Jake and Jill. I can do those if I can't find any.

I do have Col. Gibbons empty carrier hangar so I could do a shipboard F6F.

I also have the E15K "Norm" on my page at Talley-ho. It was a high speed recon float plane with retractable wing floats and a jettisonable main float. It also had 2 bladed contra-props. All the bits on the model work as they should and there's already a hangar screen.
It's in the 110c slot but I can move it if you want it.

I also found Shrek's CAW main screen.

Many thanks.

Like the look of the Norm and see it was available in 1944 though I can't find any details of operational use. Might be good to have as user loadable alternative aircraft.

"Norm" history

Post by rotton50 »

The E15K was used at the invasion of Palau, September 1944.

You also might consider the N1K1 floatplane. I think there's a model available.

BTW, I've made a lot of progess with the hangars. I'm re-assigning the hangar numbers to correspond to the slots you have set up. I'll also include the empty sprites with each package.

I'll send something your way by the end of the weekend.

That's as good an excuse as any. It can go in the ju87 slot, and I'll have the big seaplanes as alternatives.

Very much appreciate you taking on the hangar screens.

OK, I'll set that up too.

With all the slot switching going on do you need help getting the flight models in the right slots too?

Like I had to ask.

Tempest slot

Post by rotton50 »

Moggy,

While searching for the missing hangars I came across 2 possible planes for the Tempest slot.

The PBJ1 (B25J) and the Mosquito in US markings. There are models of both available on Talley-ho.

Hello Ray,

Any help on flight models welcome.

Reharding the PBJ1 - do you know when this was first used. I have the CincPac communiques and can see the B25 being used in raids throughout 1944 but its unclear as to whether this was Air Force or Marines.

It was in any event the B25 and not the B26 which I intended to have in the p38h slot

Do you have any info on US use of the Mosquito?

There are other possibilities - just taking a brief look at the USAAC chronology - there were night fighters including the P61 based on Saipan after the Island was taken in June 1944. I'm out for most of today, but will get this chronology digested asap, and then firm up on these slots.

Tempest slot

Post by rotton50 »

Moggy,

Apparently, the Mosquito was only used for recon missions by the USAAF.

The PBJ equipped 16 USMC squadrons and saw extensive service in the Pacific.

They even landed them successfully on carriers in trials but were not used operationally.

The P-61 is also a great choice for that slot.
