Landable carriers

Post by Wudpecker »

This should be of great interest, and I'm sure most already know. This fully working carrier model was tested at sea on the Launchpad last night (Saturday, Feb. 5) and was a success as you can see:

Pobs' new carrier model is reportedly going to replace Von B's crude prototype.

As I understand it Woody, this is VB's original idea of sinking the 3dz so that the carrier deck is still in fact level with the water line - and therefore aircraft can still land and take off from that surface - but as the remainder of the carrier can be seen it gives the effect of being above the water line.

Correct, Moggy.

The only drawback to the mod is that it doesn't stick up above the water on level-level flying. So I understand. But it's a landable carrier.

I'll be interested to see what the mod looks like once it has Pobs carrier model in. Looks like it could be a basis to take CAW forward.

Then we'll need some carrier models - the Japnese carriers and US light carriers and escort carriers

Ho, ho. Your mind is like mine: it leaps way ahead of what's happening.

There was talk of a Japanese (guess we can't say "Jap" any more) carrier happening. But it's a step at a time :)

I was told off once in the SimHQ forum a couple of years back for using this expression by someone passing through. My response was that it wasn't anymore perjorative than "Brit", or "Jerry" come to that.

Well, that's on a very overly politically correct forum. I'm sure, here we can refer to Jerry’s, Yanks, Russkies, Highties, Japs, Aussies, and Brits, in historically correct way.

we can certainly put our carriers in this way, and it does seem to work ok... I still haven't checked whether it will let us fly past the superstructure hit bubble at ground level... the problem with using VB's model is :

1. It is a 'cross deck' aircraft carrier.. non historical, but means we cant see if the AI planes will pass the hit bubble, because this one avoids going near the superstructure on the runway.. and

2. Looking at the image, this model is HUGE compared to the planes !! the working carriers will be much smaller than this one I think..

cheers,

I now have converted/scaled distance models from PAW for the US Fleet, Light and Escort carriers and the Japanese Fleet and light carriers.

All type 3 elements at the moments and in two parts, one tmod for the deck etc, one for the island.

Might just convert the type 3 to type 4s and muck about with some shading rather than go the whole hog at the moment and convert to skinable type 5/6

Pictures soon.

Seems to work fine using VB's ground level optical illusion.

Also have PAW US/Jap battleship, criuser and destroyer conversions.

Hello Pobs,

These are still in element type 3 condition at the moment and would need conversion to type5/6 for proper skinning.

My intention for a quick beta release was to leave them as type 3 at the moment but get a better colouring, and then skin them properly later.

Short answer is yes, I'd love to have them properly skinned, but do you have the time to do the conversion as well?

You glutton for punishment. I'll get the US ones over to you tonight. (Fleet carrier. light carrier, and escort carrier - each in two parts). I'll send the Jap ones over once I've "revisited" them shortly.

Most grateful indeed.
