The RAF’s daring secret mission to assist the 1944 Warsaw Uprising

More daring than Dambusters – my father and the wartime raid you’ve never heard of

Eighty years ago, on the afternoon of Sunday 13 August 1944, 27 crews from the RAF and South African Air Force and one Polish crew entered the operations room at the Allied Campo Casale airfield overlooking the harbour at Brindisi, in the heel of Italy.

As they sat down, they were faced with a large map of Europe with black tape running virtually its full length. The briefing officer got straight to the point. “Gentlemen, your target tonight is Warsaw.”
